The International Prostate Symptom Score

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is recommended by the WHO (World Health Organisation) in order to be able to evaluate the severity of the prostate enlargement. This self-test enables you determine the severity (1-5) of each symptom. The answer to each of the seven questions is given a score. Then the score is added together. The result is the IPSS total score (S). Then look at the result list to determine the severity of your prostate symptoms.
An additional question enables you to determine your quality of life living with prostate symptoms, the quality of life index (L).
Both scores help your doctor recommend the most suitable therapy for you.
Some of the questions are a bit difficult to understand. Take your time to really understand and answer the questions.
You can print out the completed form and give it to your doctor.

Result

IPSS 0-7 Points:

You have mild to no symptoms. Your prostate seems to be in order. However, if you are over 45, you should still have an annual cancer early detection examination.

IPSS 8-19 Points:

You have moderate symptoms. The reason for your symptoms could be benign prostate enlargement. Please consult your doctor.

IPSS 20-35 Points:

You are suffering from severe symptoms. It is imperative that you see your doctor.
