Drug treatment

As a rule, drug therapy is the first line of defence against enlarged prostate symptoms. The establish medications are able to alleviate the symptoms - but can never influence the cause. Which means they cannot, or only minimally, influence the enlarging of the prostate. In addition, they are not effective during every stage of BPH and not on every man. Medications are expensive and have to be taken daily for the rest of one's life and can lose their effectiveness in time. What's more, side effects are also possible: retrograde ejaculation , impotence , dizziness, headaches, fatigue and decreased libido.

Plant Extracts:

various plant-based substances, e.g., the so-called phytosterols  are effective against prostate symptoms in that they alleviate them. However, they are not successful in every case and not in the long term. Among the large group of phytosterols, beta sitosterine is often used. Saw palmetto, pumpkin seeds (pepitas) and nettles contain beta sitosterines.

Alpha Blockers:

relax the small muscle cells in the prostate, this improves the urine stream, thus easing urinating. The most frequent side effect of these drugs is the so-called retrograde ejaculation . But they can also cause dizziness, heart trouble and lower one's blood pressure.

5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors: can block the effect of the male hormone, testosterone, on the prostate and thus inhibit its growth. Sometimes the prostate shrinks (a maximum of 30% of its original size).
