THERMOTHERAPY ( HEAT )

Thermotherapies

Heat or thermotherapy use various heat sources in order to heat, and thus, destroy prostate tissue. All of these therapies go through the urethra - endoscopically - and apply intense heat to the prostate. The destroyed tissue remains in the prostate, and in time, it is absorbed by the body. After the operation, the prostate undergoes heat induced swelling, which can lead to considerable discomfort lasting weeks or months. Often a catheter is needed during this time. Although few complications arise from thermotherapy, none of these therapies are as effective as the classic TURP or GreenLight PVP™.

Common thermotherapies are:
  • TUMT (Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy)
  • TUNA® (Transurethral Needle Ablation)

Other laser therapies:
  • ILC (Interstitial Laser Coagulation)

None of these therapies are always able to completely free affected men of the discomforts of benign prostate enlargement or to re-establish a good urinary stream. The symptoms can recur after only one or two years.
